After almost two days of mounting speculation and wild accusations of a shadowy spying operation on the Garda Ombudsman came a statement clearing the Garda Síochána of responsibility.

However, the statement from the ombudsman did confirm that there had been three security “threats” to its communication systems and that there had been “concerns” about the integrity of its security.

The chairman of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission, Simon O’Brien, did not explain what the nature of the threats were, or state whether they actually constituted bugging or surveillance.
