‘Rural Ireland must be allowed to reach its true potential’

THE debate about the registration and inspection of septic tanks needs to move to a wider discussion about the delivery of services to rural dwellers.

There is significant potential to be tapped, if investment is made to create an environment that will encourage rural communities to develop and make a greater contribution to the country.

Before we look at those issues, let me address the septic tank situation. The minister has adopted a pragmatic approach in reducing the charge. IFA has argued that rural householders, who are already facing a range of extra charges and costs, could not afford some of the amounts mentioned.
