Slim picking: Wide interest in narrow home

BUYERS in the property market may be thin on the ground but this slim property has attracted a lot of interest.

Measuring just under 9ft wide, this Cork pad takes compact living to a whole new dimension.

Just 8ft 6in across, Number 20 Red Abbey Street, in the historical heart of Cork city, is possibly the narrowest house in the Ireland.

The tiny facade did not phase prospective buyers, who flocked to see the terraced house because of an attractive €150,000 guide price, dropped from €170,000. A sale price of 30% less than the asking price has just been negotiated, meaning its buyers will occupy a very unique city dwelling for just over €100,000 once contracts are signed, after a relatively short two-and-a-half months on the market.

All of the rooms within measure 8ft 6in wide, which will make for an interesting challenge for the new owners, who face an extensive refurbishment of the property.

The front door leads straight into the living room, which stretches back 22ft and includes a kitchen to the rear. A staircase leads to the first floor, where there are two bedrooms.

A second staircase leads to the second floor, which houses a third bedroom and a generous bathroom, given the circumstances.

Claustrophobia is not an issue according to selling agent Niall Cahalane of Cahalane Skuse.

“When it is refurbished it will make a very pretty home, it’s certainly not dull or boring,” he said.

Described in the brochure as “artisan”, the house looks to have been partitioned from its neighbour by a previous owner. It is likely to be at least a century old and is situated in the shadow of the Red Abbey Tower, which is listed as a national monument and the last remaining relic of medieval Cork.
