More than 20 years ago, I wrote a column in this newspaper about the shameful treatment of people with disabilities in Ireland.
I had been part of a delegation to the government, campaigning for change, and we met with a minister. Among other things, she told us: “It’s been my experience that people involved with disabilities have difficulty understanding figures, so I’ll explain them slowly.”
