DNA database success

THE figures showing how effective the (relatively) new national DNA database has been as a tool to fight crime begs an obvious question. Why did it take so very long — eight years of government prevarication — to put in place?

DNA database success

In just its first year in operation, the database has made a connection between individuals and 530 crimes, including 359 burglaries, 55 criminal damage cases, and five sexual assaults. In all, 95 DNA samples taken at crime scenes have been linked to other crimes.

Operated by Forensic Science Ireland, the database was launched last November and it will become a resource that will inevitably make life more difficult for criminals but easier for gardaí. To date, DNA samples have been taken from around 8,000 people, including 1,107 from criminals in jail and 775 people on the sex offenders’ register.

DNA sampling is a two-edged sword. Not only can it help convict a criminal but it can be used to protect the innocent by proving they were not involved in an incident. It is a very welcome addition to the armoury in the fight against crime.
