Public representatives must be held to account but individuals must vote too

To the caretakers of Ireland, I am writing this for two reasons. Firstly, to ask the people to snap out of it and wake up. Secondly, to please vote so we can make our leaders accountable for the decisions they are making on our behalf.

Public representatives must be held to account but individuals must vote too

Yes, each and every one of us are struggling to survive. Each of us has our own burden to carry. By asserting ourselves the load may be lightened. Anyone that is privileged enough to vote in the general or local elections should.

Why should you? By not voting you are not only taking your own voice away but you are joining the few that will have no impact on our political representatives who are supposed to be representing our interests.

Then the issues burdening you will not be dealt with in any capacity. By not voting you will not be a commodity to any public representative. Your vote is your tool. They need us more than we need them.

The secondary effect of casting our vote is accountability, ethics and transparency. The political parties and Independents will soon realise that the public is no longer accepting the waffle in the Dáil. We no longer accept policies that are implemented on our behalf, but not in our best interest — cutbacks in social housing, education, health, gardaí and the selling off of public assets such as Irish water.

I no longer accept being blindsided by political jargon. As a woman in Ireland a human being, a survivor of the industrial schools and a Traveller it may seem I’m deluded with our political system. To be honest I am, but I vote with hope. I am saying we need to make our public representatives accountable.

If politicians don’t listen to the communities they can and will be replaced in the next general and local elections.

We have no government in office at the moment. If a person lost their job would they be continue to be paid for six weeks? The system has to change. Our political system is failing the people but the people are failing the system by not voting.
