Reading the coverage of Michael Martin’s proposals for Dail reform and attitude to forming a government brings back memories of the Celtic Tiger when Martin was one of a government that thought they were irreplaceable.

As a consequence of the elevated opinion they had of themselves, not alone did they not achieve any reform, they ended up making reckless decisions which bankrupted the country. You would never know from reading, listening to and watching current media coverage that during the boom Martin was a member of a government that, with media acclaim, made decisions that trebled government spending.

That government left us with an an €85bn bailout and years of austerity. All ignored by media during the election campaign.
