Closing down Cork synagogue and gutting the building is a great loss to our heritage

I was greatly saddened to see the closure of Cork Synagogue.

Closing down Cork synagogue and gutting the building is a great loss to our heritage

But I was deeply disturbed to have seen RTÉ News of March 9 which showed the entire building had been gutted, and even the Star of David on the front of the building had been removed.

The synagogue was unique in Cork and it is a pity to see that its gutting has been carried out by the Cork Hebrew congregation itself.

While I know some items have been donated to the Cork Museum, the building itself should have been maintained, as much as was reasonably possible to keep the uniqueness of it.

It’s a great pity the planning department of Cork City has once again allowed another part of Cork heritage to be destroyed.

Shame on them and the Jewish community for not realising its heritage

When will we wake up in Ireland and start to properly protect the heritage and history of our city?
