Fianna Fáil should remember the actions of Cumann na nGaedheal
During the Civil War, 77 young men, all unarmed prisoners of war, many not even 20 years old, were executed by the then Cumann na nGaedheal / Labour government. This action, today, would have led to international protest and possibly international legal sanction against the perpetrators.
This action was also critical in the development of Fianna Fáil as a political party and a Republican opposition to the then quasi-fascist Cumann na nGaedheal-led coalition.
Today, despite promises to the contrary, the Fianna Fáil party is contemplating coalition with the direct descendants of Cumann na nGaedheal. Fianna Fáil should reflect upon their recent history and consider the consequences of making the mistake of going into coalition with Fine Gael, one which will not be forgiven quickly by a large number of Fianna Fáil supporters.
The memories of the 77 young men and their importance in the development of Fianna Fáil must not be forgotten any more than that of the executed leaders of the 1916 Rising.
