Journalistic probing doesn’t rankle politicians

I loved it.

Media: “Tánaiste, why didn’t you let the

appointment go through the system which you, yourself had championed?”

Tánaiste: “David Begg is the perfect man for the job.”

Media:”Yes, but why didn’t you let the

appointment go through the system?”

Tánaiste: “David Begg has all the attributes necessary to carry out the functions of that office.”

Media: “Yes, but....”

Could there be a more graphic illustration of the wisdom of Harold Wilson’s simple dictum: “Never mind the question, this is the answer”
