Please explain why money was spent on cycle paths and not homes

I would like to thank President Michael D Higgins for highlighting the lack of social housing being built by city and county councils and how they should be ashamed of their inaction.

However the President failed to point out the projects they have achieved: Looking out for our health, the councils built cycle and walking paths along side by-passes, where we can exercise while breathing in the outpourings of lorries and cars.

They also gave us unnecessary roundabout makeovers, which further drained our coffers.

The walker is getting well looked after as footpaths all over are being widened.

They rightly slowed down those young speeders with speed ramps all over, but much to the annoyance of firemen and ambulance drivers.

One of the most important projects was to erect signage at the cost of millions from Donegal to Kerry, pointing out how wild the west is.

Next, in case the South gets the huff, these signs will go from Kerry to Wexford, and yes you saw it coming, Wexford to the border county of Louth.

On a recent trip from Clonmel to Malin Head where my wife’s family comes from, we passed through Thurles, Birr, Athlone, Roscommon, Sligo and up to Letterkenny and onto Malin Head. I didn’t see one new house under construction on the journey.

Great little country if you are a walker or a cyclist, not so much if you are homeless or one of the 120,000 people waiting for a home.
