The Angelus on television is hardly offensive

St Stanislaus Kennedy, Br Kevin Crowley and Fr Peter McVerry are all Catholics who are known for their struggle for social justice.

The Angelus on television is hardly offensive

There are numerous others, priests, religious and laity, not well known, who tirelessly devote their lives to those in need.

The stance of the Catholic Church on social justice has earned it many enemies down through the centuries.

Letters and articles frequently appear in your newspaper condemning religion and Catholicism in particular. The latest issue on the agenda is the abolition of the Angelus from the airwaves.

The absence from our television screens of people feeding swans in a canal will hardly affect the faith of those who pray. People have prayed the Angelus long before television was invented.

The authorities should be mindful of any attempts to stamp out religious freedom. The proposed introduction of laws on hate crime and incitement to hatred is timely.
