Watching the 10.00pm news on BBC One last night, I was aghast to hear that a fruit-stall trader in Greece had reduced the price of his cherries from €2 to €1.50 a kilo.

Last Friday, I paid €12 euro a kilo for cherries, from Lidl in Carrigaline. How can such a mark-up be justified?

And if it is as it seems, how can a giant German supermarket justify paying such low prices to producers in poorer countries and then charging Irish customers so much more?
