Mature students need part-time postgraduate courses in social work

I am a graduate of a social care course and I was hoping, like so many others in my class, to go on to social work postgraduate studies – only to find that there is no part-time postgraduate course in this country.

Mature students need part-time postgraduate courses in social work

As a mature student, I need to work and could only consider this course if I could combine it with wage earning. With all the problems in this country and the fact that many social work jobs are being done by counsellors and other professions, it’s time for the universities and ITs to provide a course that mature women and men who have bills and families could undertake?

Also, you may have noticed another blow to the profession of social care. After doing 3-4 years full-time study as part of social care degrees, social care jobs have been moved to Job Bridge schemes for which people don’t even need a degree. So what is the point of completing these degrees? Most people only realise afterwards that their qualification is near pointless. Its a farce. I graduated four years ago and I know few who actually got into social care as a profession. Some are in Job Bridge working for nothing after years of college. Others are carers, the only jobs currently available.
