Ibrahim should be released from Cairo prison and returned to Dublin

I have known the Halawa family for a number of years. Ibrahim, who is in prison in Cairo (he was arrested for participating in a protest there in August, 2013) is an excellent young man.

Ibrahim should be released from Cairo prison and returned to Dublin

He is an all-round sportsman. He is loved by everyone.

He did exceptionally well in his Leaving Certificate, and he was offered a place in Trinity College, to study engineering.

After getting the good news of his results, he went to Cairo to inform the family there.

He was ‘over the moon’, as people say, and he was excited about getting a place on the engineering course at Trinity.

There was a disturbance at the end of the street where he was staying and he went down to see what it was about.

He was only 17 and teenagers do crazy things.

He thought it was great fun to be chased up the street by the police.

I have studied Arabic in Cairo, and Sharia Law.

I stayed with the Halawa family, while in Egypt. Ibrahim has an excellent family and no police record in Ireland.

I am prepared to go to Egypt and visit the authorities, in prison, and beg them on my knees to release him.

He has apologised unreservedly to the Egyptian authorities.

He has also promised to spend time in Egypt, when he receives his engineering degree, to help rebuild Cairo.

Please allow him to return to his family in Ireland, so that he can continue with his studies.

If necessary, I am prepared to replace him in prison in Cairo.

He is a young man with his whole life before him and he has great potential.

Let us remember the great Arabic phrase: ‘to err is human, to forgive is divine.’
