On the red List - Curlew population in crisis

HUMANITY has been subjected to, and benefitted from, immense change in the last century or so. However, compared to the change imposed on the wildlife and fauna around us, the changes we have faced are as a thing of nothing.

Habitats have disappeared, food sources have been so exploited by man that whole species are in jeopardy and global warming is having a profound impact too. Water abstraction and industrial and agricultural pollution and poor sewage treatment have all had a negative impact too.

One of the species threatened by this tsunami of change is the curlew. BirdWatch Ireland report that Ireland has lost about 80% of its breeding curlews and that as few as 200 breeding pairs remain, pushing this iconic bird onto the Red List of endangered species. BirdWatch Ireland are to carry out a survey on the remaining curlew population and have asked for the public’s help. This project deserves support as it will, hopefully, contribute to the rejuvenation of the species but its great worth may be making participants realise we need to do much more to protect our environment.
