What kind of parents would a child really want?

I read the article by Anne Ferris TD “Referendum is about respect for different family units” (Irish Examiner, April 6) . Obviously her opinions are influenced by her own experiences as a teenager.

Anyway, we live in a rights obsessed age, adults rights; but she makes no reference in her article to children’s rights.

It takes a male and female to create a child, therefore it surely follows that every child has a natural birth right to have both a mother and a father.

If a one-month-old child could speak would he/she ask for a mam and dad, or two mams or two dads?

A hypothetical question I know, but one that needs to be addressed in the interests of children.
