Halawa accountable under Egyptian law

Victoria While (Irish Examiner, April 2) believes Ibrahim Halawa to be an “innocent” Irishman. Halawa, while visiting relations in Cairo, allegedly took part in anti-government demonstrations.

Halawa accountable under Egyptian law

One member of his family, in a recent interview, indicated they just went along to see what was happening. Anyone who has lived in Egypt (we did for five years) will know that when demonstrations are ongoing “normal, law-abiding persons” remain in their homes.

The Egyptian legal system differs from the Irish system. Irish nationals/passport-holders, when abroad, are expected to respect laws. Likewise, Ireland is protective of the independence of its own legal system.

Irish politicians should not be seen to be interfering with the legal system of another country. I consider it inappropriate to link political demonstrations that support fundamentalism (and Sharia Law) with Irish anti-water demonstrations (as did a member of the Halawa family).

Ibrahim Halawa, while in Egypt, is accused of involvement in anti-government activities. He is accountable under Egyptian law.
