We need to maintain the graves of Fenian heroes

On a recent visit to Rathcooney in Co Cork, I was attracted to a large gravestone located in the old graveyard.

We need to maintain the graves of Fenian heroes

The grave is that of the renowned Brian Dillon, born in Glanmire in 1830. His family later moved and lived in the area known as Dillons Cross. He became a Fenian leader and was arrested in 1865 and sentenced to 10 years in Mountjoy. A year later, he fell seriously ill and died at home in 1872, aged 42.

Dillon was buried after a funeral attended by thousands of Cork people.
