Public paying price for opposing harbour plans

Your coverage on page one, and two-page spread on pages six and seven of the Irish Examiner (April 6) was excellent writing by Eoin English.

Public paying price for opposing harbour plans

Within it, several references were made to the Port of Cork’s deepwater development aspirations in Ringaskiddy, a development that is currently before An Bórd Pleanála for a planning decision.

A consubstantial development had a planning application refused in 2008. That application cost the taxpayers of this country dearly; many millions of euro were expended by the Port of Cork in putting the application together.

The people of the Cork Harbour area dug very deep into their own pockets and bank accounts to object; that objection, that the development would have been in the wrong location within the harbour, was upheld on several grounds. The very same objection has being made to the current application.

Surely, it would only be appropriate for the Irish Examiner to give balance in its journalism by giving a similar amount of column inches to the other side of the discussion.
