‘No’ side are distorting facts to suit their values

The tactics of the ‘no’ side in the Marriage Equality debate are quite unprecedented in the history of Irish referendums.

‘No’ side are distorting facts to suit their values

The Irish electorate is being implicitly told that by voting ‘no’, they will be rejecting the separate Children and Family Relationships Bill.

This bill has already been voted through the Oireachtas and will be unaffected by the vote on May 22 which is just about granting equal legal recognition to same gender couples.

I would like to take this opportunity to plead with Margaret Hickey and others on the ‘no’ side to not disrespect the Irish electorate and to agree with the yes side that the best interests of everyone are served by an honest and courteous debate based on facts, not distortions.
