Capitol idea - €50m city centre proposal

JUST as in many other town and city centres across the country the recession has had a dreadful impact on Cork City centre. 

There are far too many empty and dilapidated buildings contributing to an air of decline and failure.

Therefore, the announcement that planning permission will be sought for a €50m redevelopment plan for the Capitol cinema complex, and some adjoining buildings, is very welcome and a positive development for Cork City.

Coming so soon after the announcement of a multi-million project at Albert Quay, the events centre at the old Beamish and Crawford site, and the rejuvenation of Páirc Uí Chaoimh, this latest announcement suggests a price tag of something north of €250m for these four projects alone.

This represents a considerable vote of confidence in the city centre’s future, and hopefully it and other developments will be a catalyst for a badly needed wider recovery in the city. The momentum these developments will generate also adds weight to the argument that radical intervention is needed at Cork airport if it is to realise its potential.
