And now it’s the rights of children to be brought up by their natural father and mother that they are worked up about.
Have they forgotten the virtual kidnapping of the children of widowers by religious, and their sale or gifting to totally strange couples in foreign lands?
Have they forgotten the treatment meted out in orphanages to youngsters forced into virtual slave labour making rosaries until their hands bled?
And today the issue is the chronic indoctrination of school children in publicly-funded schools, whose parents want none of it.
The frighteners are now being put on people by claiming that in the interests of equality, every married couple of men will have the same rights to adopt as a man and woman in a marriage.
Their unqualified assertion of equality for all before the law is false. The Constitution (Article 40.1) makes this clear: “This shall not be held to mean that the State shall not in its enactments have due regard to the difference of capacity, physical and moral, and of social function.”
Personally, I would support adoption of the natural child of one of the parties to a mono-gender civil marriage by that couple, but I would prefer if our legislature enacted laws which gave preference to mixed-gender marriages in other circumstances.
I would prefer to entrust those we elect to parliament to make prudent decisions, which can readily be altered in the light of experience.
