Gilmore not entitled to be EU Commissioner

Democracy still matters in Ireland, in spite of its imperfections and the damage done to people by recent Irish politicians.

Gilmore not entitled to be EU Commissioner

In our most recent democratic election, the people rejected Labour party policies, leading to the resignation of party leader, Eamon Gilmore.

Over the past half century, I have voted for Labour more often than not, and may do so again, given the dearth of better alternatives.

However, I am deeply concerned by the arrogance of Gilmore, and of other senior Labour politicians, in seeking to have him nominated as Ireland’s EU Commissioner.

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has had the sensitivity and commonsense to bow out gracefully.

Gilmore should do likewise, rather than claim ‘entitlement’ to such an important position as EU Commissioner.

Public service is a privilege, not an entitlement.

If Irish politicians continue to pursue such ‘jobs-for-the-boys’ attitudes, then even more serious damage will be done to Irish democracy.

Mr Gilmore, the people have spoken, please accept their verdict.
