On-the-spot fine to curb cyclists on footpaths

I contend daily with the danger of cyclists using footpaths and crashing red lights at pedestrian crossings.

So, I see the forthcoming council elections as an opportunity to raise the issue with candidates by email.

I suggest that on-the-spot fines be imposed on offending cyclists as a deterrent to their behaviour.

The Gardaí have said this would be difficulty to implement, as cyclists could give a false name and address.

That begs the question: what’s the point of the many signs on footpaths warning dog owners they risk a fine of €150, if their dog fouls a footpath?

However, I was told recently that Transport Minister Leo Varadkar is committed to introducing on-the-spot fines for cycling offences that are currently prosecuted through the courts.

Let’s keep the authorities under pressure to deal with this issue and prevent further injuries to pedestrians.
