We need to embrace a new system of learning

As a student who studied for the Junior Cert exam I was pleased to hear that the Government have taken steps to introduce a new system of learning that hopefully will encompass every aspect of student creativity rather than just concentrating on a narrow-minded exam-orientated schedule that leads to the exclusion of many talented individuals who oftentimes are overlooked by teachers who perceive them as lacking any real academic ability.

We need to embrace a new system of learning

While this is a positive step, it will only benefit students if changes are also introduced to the archaic Leaving Cert programme. Currently it’s based solely on rote learning that suppresses any type of original thought or imagination, leading to subjects like art and music being largely disregarded. Pupils who may have an aptitude for them may lose interest in school altogether. The fact that the TUI have so many reservations about these changes should come as no surprise, as many teachers would be more than happy to continue with the current system which caters solely for students with academic ability.

This rote learning also has more far-reaching implications. Students that graduate from third level, who may be accomplished in the theoretical aspect of their cours,e may show no desire for innovation — a vital component developed only in a creative teaching environment.
