Hope during war

Patrick O’Brien (Letters, Nov 15) defends Poppy-wearing as those who died in the Great War “saved Europe from Prussian militarism”.

However, the scourge of militarism was scarcely confined to one country. Probably, the most hopeful sign during the war was the spontaneous albeit short-lived 1914 Christmas truce.
