Contrasting performances by two political leaders
His handling of the party vote on the abortion debate, in which he sensed the majority opposition to the Bill within his own party and allowed members to vote, according to their conscience, contrasted favourably with the divisive and autocratic manner in which Mr Kenny dealt with the Fine Gael TDs and senators who could not reconcile supporting a motion which deviated so sharply from their election manifesto promise.
Similarly, his astute reading of the electorate’s mood regarding the removal of the Seanad demonstrated how out of touch Mr Kenny was on such an important issue. Mr Martin offered a real alternative voice to those opposed to such a drastic measure.
