Democracy under threat

When arguing for or against anything proposed by the establishment in Ireland this past 20 years, one feels like King Canute charging the waves.

Democracy under threat

Our Pro-Life campaign meeting, almost weekly since the ‘X’ Case in ’92, coming up to the recent vote on abortion, was not allowed on our local radio station. Democracy in Ireland and Europe, like a cinema image, is still being projected loud and clear, until you go behind the screen. The pell mell career into totalitarianism can only end in tears. With dissent now being met by the riot police, and public forums operating as tightly closed shops, we are well beyond the point of no return.

And now on Oct 4, we are asked about abolishing the Senate, (guardian of our constitution), to add a fifth level of court and to change Supreme Court procedure. The latter amendments are designed to place the courts even more under the thumb of the governing elite, who appoint them in the first place.! All the nightmare science fiction scenarios of the 70s and 80s seem to be coming true. If I were living in the time of the Pilgrim Fathers I would be on their boat. But there are no Pilgrim Fathers now.
