Girl Guides — a cheap and healthy pastime

This year, parents are under huge financial pressure as their children return to school. Picking up the tab for books, uniforms, and other costs is such a challenge that there is little to spend on extra-curricular activities.

Most parents recognise the benefits of enrolling their children in activities outside school hours, such as music lessons and sports, but those who can’t afford fees may fear their children are missing out.

Despite a 32% cut in government funding over the past four years, Irish Girl Guides provide girls and young women, from age five to 26, with a varied and fun programme to help them develop a range of skills.

Our annual national membership fee is €40, with each local ‘ladybird’, ‘brownie’, ‘guide’ or ‘ranger’ unit asking for a small, weekly donation of up to €2 to cover costs: eg, hall rental, heating and resource books.

Guiding gives girls a head-start in life by encouraging them to be happy, self-confident and curious, as well as giving them a sense of responsibility.

Since our centenary year in 2011, our membership has increased by more than 1,500 to 12,000, as more and more girls — and their parents — recognise that we provide a safe space for girls and young women from all faiths, backgrounds and nationalities.
