Refugees unfeasible

I object to Peter Kennedy’s startling suggestion that Ireland “should take in between 50,000 and 100,000 refugees from Syria” (Letters, Aug 27).

Refugees unfeasible

Firstly, there is a profound cultural (social and religious) incongruity between Syrians and the Irish. Secondly, Ireland does not have the money to pay for social welfare, housing, etc, for refugees; we have our own ‘nation building’ to do.

Thirdly, where would such a precedent end? If Ireland invited refugees from Syria, why not refugees from other countries, such as North Korea or those in Africa? The suggestion of “taking in” Syrian refugees is unfeasible, and unfair to the Irish people, and this is why I would object in the strongest terms.
