We need to keep our dogs under control

A debate over the control of dogs in public places is welcome. In one respect there should be no debate if parks’ bye-laws and the control of animals were ever taken seriously and were subject to garda enforcement, but a feature of all our parks and beaches is unfettered canines.

We need to keep our dogs under control

Many parks and beaches are intimidating for children and those afraid of dogs, but owners view those perceived threats from their dog and their excrement to the health and well being of others as an exaggerated issue.

While I like dogs, I am astounded to see an ignorance, despite well-reported maulings, that allows big unleashed animals intimidate children and others in public places. The public health issue of toxocara and blindness is related to this lack of responsibility. Certainly big dogs need space and socialisation and most are charming, but they are animals capable of causing great fear and harm and we must debate their control.
