We public servants are not to blame for crisis

Civil and public servants must be immune to the constant bashing of our private sector brethren.

Everyone is only too aware of the present economic situation in the country.

Listening to some commentators, and reading copious letters to newspaper editors, I have the impression that the ills of this country have all been attributed to civil and public servants. Every reasonable person, of course, knows that this is not the case.

Many of those people who constantly carp on about public servants, Croke Park, and pensions, etc, earn huge sums of money, benefiting from corporate perks like golf outings, and rugby and GAA hospitality, etc. During the good years, few of us were passengers in the numerous helicopters crisis-crossing the country.

Then, you rarely heard a civil or public servant criticising the lavish, and often ostentatious, lifestyles of many in the private sector, some of whom contributed to our present situation.

The ordinary man and woman in the street should know that this country has not been dragged down by civil or public servants, but, like so many sectors of the population, we are now all paying for the sins of others.
