Opportunity on future oil and gas finds

AS a former member of the Joint Committee on Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, I want to welcome the report of the committee on future oil and gas finds off our coasts.

The essential recommendations of the report — that the State seek to double its tax take from major finds, and that greater transparency and consultation are established around the licensing process — are very welcome.

The line minister with responsibility for this area, Pat Rabbitte, needs to respond comprehensively to the recommendations of the report.
