Lost children - Our real motivations

Apart from the death of a child there can be nothing as heartbreaking as the disappearance of one.

It may even be inappropriate to measure one catastrophe against the other. How would you cope with either?

Five years ago Madeleine McCann, then aged three, vanished from the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz.

Though hundreds of thousands of children vanished without trace in this cruel world since then Madeleine has become a symbol for all of the others, even those with parents less dedicated than the McCanns to recovering their child.

The anniversary offers us an opportunity to consider for a moment what really motivates us and enriches our lives.
