There has been a noticeable ratcheting up of anti-Catholic commentary (most of it, as usual, ill-informed) in the media and elsewhere in recent weeks.

It reached its crescendo in a quite appalling RTE Liveline (Apr 12), which provided an outlet for what seemed like every anti-Catholic bigot in the country to have their say.

It’s difficult to rationalise the source of this outrage, but a number of factors come to mind: the recent census figures which revealed a quite staggering figure of 84% identifying as Catholic and the noticeable increase in numbers attending Easter Church services (standing room only in many parishes).
