One giant leap

At the risk of appearing pedantic (pedantic? moi? never!)

One giant leap

I think the exact words spoken by Neil Armstrong when he landed on the moon (Quiz, Saturday, Mar 17) are not the oft quoted: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

This, when you think about it, doesn’t make much sense. After all, in this context, what’s the difference between man and mankind?

I think what he actually said was: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.”
