When Government falls Fianna Fáil will replace it

There is no more articulate and prescient a commentator on political affairs than your columnist, Ivan Yates (Opinion, March 8).

Mr Yates made interesting observations about the reality for Fianna Fáil and their ‘soldier of destiny’ Micheál Martin. Yates said if Martin rules out coalition with Fine Gael before the next election then he can rule out being a minister again.

While Fianna Fáil is in the political wilderness, the last election showed us that the Irish electorate is at its most volatile. That the other two centrist parties occupy the government benches allows massive scope for Fianna Fáil to capitalise later, for the Government will flounder. The threat from the left, in the shape of Sinn Féin, is illusory.
