President must step up

THE imposition of the new household tax is clearly unjust.

President must step up

It takes no account of the inability of poor people to pay it. Let us bring a sense of sanity to the ongoing debate.

The Government will refer the Finance Bill to President Higgins in due course for his signature. In my humble opinion, before he might sign it into law, it would be entirely appropriate if he called a meeting of his Council of State to consider referring the Bill to the Supreme Court for their opinion on a matter of such fundamental injustice. Our president has an important role in the constitutional checks and balances that safeguard the people.
