Domestic abuse - Shameful lack of safety

The report by Safe Ireland, released yesterday, indicates a massive increase in the number of people seeking refuge from domestic violence.

In the midst of the financial stress in which many families find themselves, some are turning to drink or drugs in their frustration. They may be victims of their own stress, but their families become the innocent victims of ensuing domestic violence.

The most disconcerting aspect of this phenomenon was the 40% rise in the number of instances in which women and children were turned away from domestic violence refuges because there was no room for them.

National statistics on domestic violence for 2010 indicate that 7,235 women and 2,850 children received support from domestic violence services last year. In 3,004 instances, however, women with children were actually turned away.

This country has failed miserably in providing shelter. Ireland has just one third of the refuge capacity recommended by the Council of Europe.

There are 20 domestic violence refuges in the country, but those are already over-stretched. Although a refuge should be completed in Kildare next month, there is no money available to open it.

Ignoring such problems incubates other problems, as children from such homes often turn into dysfunctional adults. We must insist on relevant, adequate facilities to assist these unfortunate families.
