AS Ivan Yates pointed out (Opinion, Sept 1), when children go back to school it means extra bills for parents.

One shockingly wasteful additional expense is the endless stream of “new” editions of school books, which prevents parents from handing them down to younger children or selling them for second-hand reuse.

An easy way to avoid this would be if schools simply declined to put these latest editions on their lists unless there has been a significant change to the curriculum.
