Mortgage crisis - A dishonest society?

THERE have been more than a few red herrings thrown into the debate about what has become known as mortgage forgiveness — as if the people in trouble had committed a crime by trying to put a roof over their heads.

Some sort of rescue package is essential but it must be confined, focussed and designed to help only those in the gravest difficulty. No one with a grip on reality would suggest that debt be written off in any widespread way.

However, we might all take a moment to consider whether the levels of abuse predicted in those circumstances might come to pass. Sadly, it is impossible to dismiss this charge. What a dishonest society we seem.
