Minister must act over ESB benefits

I WAS appalled to read that some families have now been reduced to choosing between paying their mortgage and buying food. Not so with the happy employees of the ESB and Bord Gais.

The ESB pays an average yearly wage of €75,000 and this apparently, when you add pension benefits paid by the company, rises to €94,000.

Are we mad to allow such a situation to continue? Is the minister responsible for this appalling over payment in anyway being held to account? I cringe when I hear or read that these semi-state bodies are autonomous and free from political interference.

Why should this be? Is the minister afraid to tackle the situation? Do we the public just continue to pay to maintain their beautiful lifestyles? Enough Minister Rabbitte. It’s time to stop hiding in the long grass and do something. We must also look at ourselves and ask “how much are we prepared to take?”

This “we pay, they play” cannot be allowed to continue. Mr Rabbitte, put your fear aside and take action.
