An overdue welcome

I WAS bemused by Aodhagan Mac Coitir’s mistaken idea that a welcome for Queen Elizabeth (April 9) implies some sort of elitism.

An overdue welcome

The queen is the constitutional head of state of our nearest neighbours, and in that context only, she is being extended a long-overdue welcome. How she was chosen is entirely a matter for them.

Nor are we spending “millions” on the queen’s security in support of elitism. The millions are being spent because this democratic republic has its own homegrown elite of murderous thugs, capable of dishonouring our name without any mandate, as recent events have only too tragically proved.
