BY abolishing the Seanad, “more power and decision-making will be foisted into fewer hands” according to Matthias Cowley (March 28).

Power will always reside in the Dáil

However, the simple fact is that when the Seanad is abolished, power and decision-making will remain exactly where it is now — in the Dáil. The Seanad has no power whatsoever.

Even when it “amends” a bill all that happens is that the “amended” bill returns to the Dáil, which can then tell the Seanad to “go fly a kite” and proceed with the original bill.
