Flood-prone area should not be zoned

IN recent years an area of Bandon, known locally as the bogs, was developed with a shopping centre built on it.

At the time local people knew that development in this area was wrong, but they were ignored.

The result was that the worst floods Bandon has ever seen occurred in 2009.

My own village is now in a similar situation to Bandon.

About a mile upriver in an area known locally as the Ballyoran bogs, some councillors want to get the area zoned for development.

The planners are adamant this area should not be zoned.

The residents do not want to see their houses flooded.

All one can do is ask the councillors to consider the destruction that flooding does to the homes and lives of hard-working people, and not zone this land at the Local Area Plan meeting today in the County Hall.
