VHI has case to answer on Cork hospital

IS there no end to Ireland’s ability to waste resources? Did the previous government and the banks not do enough damage, without the VHI following on with further destruction?

The Sheehan group have invested €90 million-plus to provide the citizens of Cork with one of the most modern hospital facilities in Europe. The cost of procedures at CMC would have been 15% cheaper than in other hospitals in Cork.

Should I require hospitalisation for an operation costing say €10,000, VHI would cover me in a hospital, areas of which are over 100 years old. VHI would not cover me in the ultra modern Cork Medical Centre where the cost would be €1,500 less.

Is it too much to expect one’s insurer to provide one with the best possible service at the lowest available cost?
