Declaring that he “was not giving media interviews” he adopted the default position of the once-powerful having to, just possibly, face a bill for their recklessness.

He has bunkered down behind platoons of spiky solicitors and, though he has not fled the jurisdiction like his successor David Drumm and some of Anglo’s hugely indebted developer clients, he has refused to help an Oireachtas committee investigating the banking collapse. Mr FitzPatrick, who, in the popular imagination personifies the very worst of smash-and- grab capitalism, does not do transparency. Until it, just a little bit though, suits him.
