Simply brilliant, the proclamation of dependence

AS a fellow journalist, I wish to congratulate you on your brilliant front page based on the 1916 proclamation (‘Proclamation of dependence’, November 19) on the sorry financial state of the land of my blood.

One of your lamentable politicians claimed a few years ago the population of Ireland, including its diaspora, is in fact about 80 million. Can I suggest you appeal to the masses who love their true homeland to donate some cash, gratis, to try to save you from the corrupt tentacles of the imploding farce that is the ‘European Disunion’? I don’t have much, but I’d gladly contribute £100 on one condition — that the likes of Bono, Bob Geldof, Terry Wogan, JP McManus, Padraig Harrington, Louis Walsh and so forth publicly agree to contribute 100 times my paltry sum. I would gladly go to jail or even die to preserve my independence as a journalist. Surely, Ireland as a nation must have an even more passionate approach to preserving its hard-won independence.
