Though it has, like all social welfare payments, been increased fairly significantly in the last decade it is still a paltry income and anyone dependent on it leads a frugal existence.

And, while our circumstances are certainly exceptional, there are lots of alternatives to be exhausted before we even consider cutting this meagre allowance. That, however, does not mean that all pensions can be put off limits and, as the December budget will confirm, neither will they.
